Sunspot in Zimbabwe

Enjoying a lovely dinner (ao. a good piece of warthog) at the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge in Zimbabwe, I took this close-up of the sun setting down in Zimbabwe. To my surprise I noticed that I probably captured a real sunspot (wikipedia):
At first I thought this was caused by some dust or dirt on my lens. This was not the case.
Would be great if someone with more experience could confirm (or explain what this is)...

  1. I don't want to be a spoiler, but it could be dust on you mirror inside the camera as well.

On my 20D at least, that is how it looks.

To be sure, check what aparture you had when takning this picture and take another one on a blank piece of paper with the same settings. See if you get a spot at that location in that picture as well.

I hope I'm wrong, because a sun spot would be sooo much more awsome :)

  2. Thx for your reaction. I know what you mean Jan and did verify this in a way similar to what you're describing.

My conclusion is that this is not dust on the lens ;-)
